Therapeutic Grooming & Personal Care Support

Making personal care a more comfortable experience.

For many children, everyday grooming, haircuts, combing, nail trimming or face washing, can feel overwhelming rather than routine. At Heyday Sensory Salon, we take a therapeutic, child-centred approach to helping children build tolerance, confidence and a sense of control.

Understanding the Reaction

Why grooming can feel overwhelming

When a child resists a haircut or nail trim, their nervous system may genuinely be registering it as a threat, not stubbornness.

01

Scalp & Touch Sensitivity

For some children, light touch on the scalp or skin, like a comb or clippers, can feel far more intense than it looks, which is why they pull away or resist.

02

Sound & Vibration

Clippers and dryers are loud and vibrate close to the ears. That combination can be genuinely overwhelming, not just an overreaction.

03

Feeling Out of Control

Capes that restrict the arms, tall chairs, or having a head held still can all make a child feel physically restrained, which understandably triggers resistance.

Our Approach

Five ways we build tolerance and confidence

A structured, gentle approach designed to move at your child's pace, never past it.

Pillar 01

Hair & Scalp Tolerance

Gradually building comfort with touch on the scalp, moving at a pace the child can manage, before any cutting tools are introduced.

Pillar 02

Sitting & Postural Tolerance

Comfortable, secure seating options, including low seating or a caregiver's lap, instead of a tall chair that can feel unstable.

Pillar 03

A Calm Sensory Environment

Soft lighting, a quiet space, and an unhurried pace, without the noise and bright lights of a typical salon.

Pillar 04

Communication & Choice

Visual routine cues and a clear way for the child to signal a pause, so they always have a say in what happens next.

Pillar 05

Gradual Exposure

Sessions build slowly, sometimes starting with just exploring the tools as toys. We never push past what a child can handle in a session.

Designed for Comfort

Tools chosen with care

Every tool we use is chosen to reduce the sensory intensity of a typical grooming routine, nothing sharp, jarring or unexpected.

  • Soft-Touch Brushes & Combs

Gentle materials chosen to feel less sharp against sensitive skin.

  • Quieter Trimmers

Lower-noise tools to reduce the sound and vibration a child has to tolerate.

  • Weighted Lap Pads

Gentle, calming pressure that can help some children feel more settled.

  • Choice & Break Cards

A simple, tangible way for a child to signal they need a pause.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this a regular hair salon?

No. The Sensory Salon is a therapeutic, child-centred service focused on building tolerance and comfort with grooming and personal care, not a commercial hair styling service.

How many sessions will my child need?

It depends entirely on the child. Some children make progress over a few sessions, others need longer. We move at your child's pace, not a fixed schedule.

What happens if my child becomes distressed during a session?

We never push through distress. If a child becomes overwhelmed, we pause, step back, and help them settle, rather than continuing.

Can we bring a comfort item from home?

Yes, absolutely. A favourite toy, blanket or comfort item is welcome and can genuinely help a child feel safer.

Does this help with things like toothbrushing or nail clipping too?

The same gentle, gradual approach we use for hair care can apply to other personal care routines. Let us know what you're working on and we can talk it through.
